Oh, Ariana! Her news cycles are never not brutal, and the latest one definitely makes her ‘top 3 worst’: fans are rightfully concerned after her Petal music video displayed an extremely thin, worrisome frame, and her people have responded by canceling her upcoming West End theatre run and saying that she’s taking a long-planned break from the spotlight. One absolute truth about Ariana Grande is that she’s a generational talent—you simply cannot deny her pipes or producing ability. At the start of her current Eternal Sunshine tour, I felt sad about the whole thing. As it’s gone on, I’ve had the feeling like she’s coming back into her own: doing fun new vocal runs on old songs, moving around more, and happily hooking up with her ex. We continue to root for Ms. Grande, and we’ve been texting about Petal (the album) nonstop since it dropped: it’s angry, hyper-lyrical (is this her Tortured Poets Department), and bringing back a bit of the R&B Ariana we love so much. Let’s scent her.
